The Bangalore to Ooty road trip is one of South India's classic weekend drives — 270 kilometres from the tech capital to the Queen of Hill Stations, winding through Bandipur forest, past tea estates, and up 36 hairpin bends into the cool mist of the Nilgiris. One rule catches most first-timers: the Bandipur forest stretch shuts between 9 PM and 6 AM. This guide covers every route option, the best stops along the way, 20+ places to visit in Ooty, where to stay, what to eat, and a detailed 3-day itinerary — all with 2026 prices, road conditions, and traffic advisories.

Why drive instead of taking the train or bus

The train from Bangalore to Mettupalayam takes 8–9 hours, then you still need the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (another 5 hours) or a taxi up the ghats. KSRTC buses take 8–10 hours but drop you at the bus stand — you'll need autos for every sightseeing trip. Driving gives you full control: leave at 5 AM, stop at Mysore for breakfast, linger in Bandipur for wildlife spotting, arrive in Ooty by early afternoon, and use your car for all sightseeing without negotiating with auto drivers.

The route also passes through some of the best forest and ghat scenery in South India — Bandipur National Park, the Mudumalai wildlife corridor, and the Pykara valley. A bus or train window doesn't let you stop and take it in. Your own car does.

Best time for this drive

March to June is peak season in Ooty — temperatures sit at a comfortable 15–25°C while the rest of South India bakes. The Ooty Summer Festival and the Flower Show at the Botanical Garden (mid-May) are major draws. Roads are dry and visibility is excellent. The trade-off is crowds and premium hotel pricing.

October to February offers the second-best window — post-monsoon freshness, clear skies, and fewer tourists. December and January get cold (nighttime lows of 5–8°C), so pack layers. This is the best season for photographers and couples.

July to September — monsoon transforms the Nilgiris into an impossibly lush green landscape. Waterfalls like Pykara are at their most dramatic. The ghat roads can get slippery and foggy. Only recommended if you're comfortable driving in low visibility and don't mind itinerary changes due to weather.

Critical: The Bandipur forest stretch is closed to all non-local vehicles from 9 PM to 6 AM. Plan your departure so you cross this section during daylight.

Four routes to Ooty

Choose your route based on time, vehicle type, and what you want to see along the way.

Route 2 · Salem → Mettupalayam → Coonoor → Ooty

Bangalore → Hosur → Salem → Mettupalayam → Coonoor → Ooty (NH-44)

~380 km, 8–10 hours. Longer but avoids the Bandipur night closure entirely. The Bangalore–Salem highway (NH-44) is excellent four-lane. From Mettupalayam, the Nilgiri ghat road climbs through Coonoor before reaching Ooty. Better for larger vehicles (Innova, Tempo Traveller) as the roads are wider. Less scenic than the Mysore route, but no timing pressure.

Route 3 · Kanakapura → Kollegal → Chamarajanagar → Ooty

Bangalore → Kanakapura → Malavalli → Kollegal → Chamarajanagar → Gundlupet → Bandipur → Ooty

~300 km, 7–8 hours. A good alternative if you want to skip Mysore highway traffic. The roads through Kollegal and Chamarajanagar are quieter, cutting through rural Karnataka with occasional forest stretches. You join the Bandipur route near Gundlupet, so the night closure still applies.

Route 4 · By train & toy train

Take an overnight train from Bangalore to Coimbatore or Mettupalayam (8–9 hours). From Mettupalayam, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train climbs to Ooty over 5 hours — a UNESCO World Heritage experience through 16 tunnels and over 31 bridges. The toy train is experience in itself, but you lose the flexibility of having your own car for sightseeing.

Where to stop on the way

Five pit stops that turn a 7-hour drive into a memorable road trip.

First Break
50 kmfrom Bangalore

Ramanagara — first tea break

The first proper breather at 50 km. Named the "Silk City," Ramanagara is also the location of the iconic Sholay rocks. Stop at Kamat Lokaruchi or any highway dhaba for a quick breakfast of idli, vada, or dosa with strong filter coffee. Clean washrooms, back on the road in 20 minutes.

Breakfast & Fuel
140 kmfrom Bangalore

Mysore — the ideal breakfast stop

The 145-km expressway takes about 2.5 hours. If you left at 5 AM, you arrive around 7:30 AM — perfect timing. Hotel RRR or Vinayaka Mylari for the legendary Mysore dosa. Fill your fuel tank here — the next reliable stations are in Gundlupet and Gudalur, and you don't want to be searching for a pump in the Bandipur forest.

If you have an extra hour, the Mysore Palace opens at 10 AM and is worth the detour.

Quick facts Drive: 2.5 hrs · Must-eat: Mysore Dosa at Hotel RRR · Fill fuel here · Optional: Mysore Palace
Wildlife Corridor
200 kmfrom Bangalore

Bandipur National Park — the highlight of the drive

You enter the Bandipur Tiger Reserve around Gundlupet, and the next 35 km through the forest is strictly regulated: speed limit 35–40 km/h, no honking, no stopping except at designated points. This is not bureaucracy — it directly protects elephants, deer, wild boar, and bison that cross the road. In early morning light, the wildlife spotting is excellent. The forest entry fee is ~₹50–100 per car.

Remember: Gates close at 9 PM sharp. If you're late, you sleep at the gate till 6 AM.

Gudalur — last town before the ghats

Sitting at the junction of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala, Gudalur is where the landscape shifts — tea estates appear on the hillsides and the temperature drops. Stop at a roadside stall for a cup of freshly brewed Nilgiri tea. Hotel Sri Krishna Bhavan serves a reliable lunch if you're hungry. Fill your tank here — the 35-km climb to Ooty consumes more fuel than you expect.

Pykara & Wenlock Downs — the scenic payoff

About 20 km before Ooty, the drive opens into one of the most beautiful stretches of the trip — pine forests, rolling grasslands, and valley views around every corner. Pykara Lake offers speed boating (₹200+ per person) with far fewer crowds than Ooty Lake. Pykara Falls is a stepped waterfall best seen post-monsoon (entry ₹40). Wenlock Downs (9th Mile) is the rolling grassland that every photographer stops at. Pull over safely and take it in.

What is the best route from Bangalore to Ooty?

The most popular route is via Mysore and Bandipur (NH-275 → NH-181). It's the shortest at ~275 km and the most scenic, passing through Bandipur National Park. However, you must cross the Bandipur forest between 6 AM and 9 PM — the gates are closed at night.

Is the Bangalore to Ooty road good for self-drive?

Yes. The Bangalore–Mysore stretch is a 6-lane expressway in excellent condition. The Bandipur forest road is well-tarred but narrow. The ghat section has 36 hairpin bends — stay in low gears and use engine braking on descents.

What is the Bandipur night closure?

Vehicles are not allowed through Bandipur National Park between 9 PM and 6 AM to protect wildlife crossing the road at night. Forest guards enforce it strictly. If you arrive after 9 PM, you must wait until 6 AM.

What is the best time to visit Ooty in 2026?
